What are wax filters used for?
Wax filters are used to prevent and counteract damage by moisture and earwax in the hearing aid. To maintain good hearing quality and to prolong the life of your hearing aid, it is a good idea to change the wax filter regularly. Exactly how often is very individual depending on how much wax build-up you have in your ear and the type of ear wax. Usually you will notice when your hearing deteriorates and it is time to replace the wax filter. As a rule of thumb, it's a good idea to change the wax filter about every two or three months.

How often do you need to change the wax filter?
How often depends mainly on how much waxing you have and the type of wax. We usually say every two to three months. But it may need to be changed more often if you have a lot of ear wax. If you don't have a lot of wax, you may want to change it less often. The important thing is to check your wax filter regularly to see if it needs replacing. When you notice a deterioration in your hearing, it is often a sign that it is time to change the wax filter.
What is the difference between a wax filter and a filter?
Wax filter and filter are often synonymous with each other. There are a number of different wax filters that fit different hearing aids and it may be a good idea to consult your audiologist about which one is right for your model. Your audiologist will understand what you mean when you say filter or wax filter for your hearing aid.
Do I have to wear a wax filter on my hearing aid?
Not all hearing aids have an associated wax filter that fits. The purpose of the wax filter is to protect your hearing aid speakers from the moisture in the ear wax. If too much wax gets in, it can reduce hearing performance and, in the worst case, destroy the speaker unit. If you have a hearing aid with a speaker unit, for example if you have a behind-the-ear hearing aid model RITE or an in-ear model, you will need a wax filter.
How to change the wax filter on your hearing aid
Although the wax filters are quite small, it is easy to change the wax filter on your hearing aid. Start by removing the dome to access the wax filter. The next step is to pick out a new wax filter, often a pin comes with two sides where one side has a new wax filter and the other side is empty. Use the empty side to remove the old wax filter from your hearing aid and then attach the new filter to the hearing aid. Changing the wax filter is no more difficult than that.
