A cochlear implant (CI) is a hearing aid that is inserted when a normal hearing aid is no longer effective. In many cases, it enables near full hearing in individuals with hearing loss or congenital deafness.
Compared to a conventional hearing aid that only amplifies sound, the cochlear implant bypasses the defective part of the inner ear to restore hearing. This part is medically called the "cochlea" and hence the name of the implant. The implanted part is inserted by operating behind the ear and then there is an external part, often called the speech processor, which is worn behind the ear like a normal hearing aid.
Consult your audiologist if you are a candidate for a cochlear implant. This is an operation performed by experienced ear surgeons. If your hearing loss is so severe that you cannot use a conventional hearing aid, a cochlear implant may be an option for you.
