How is sound measured?
Sound is measured in decibels (dB).
Important things to consider about noise
Sustained noise levels above 75-80 decibels (dB) can cause hearing damage. Continuous noise of 85 dB can cause significant hearing damage. Prolonged exposure to noise at 90 dB can cause hearing damage three times more severe than noise at 85 dB. Short-term, loud noise such as a loud explosion near the ear at 130-140 dB can also cause hearing damage.
Not always best with the strongest hearing protection
Choosing the hearing protector that attenuates the most is not always right. With a high attenuation hearing protector in a low-noise environment, there is a risk that the user will feel isolated and remove the protector to hear shouts and warning signals, dramatically reducing the protective effect. It is therefore more important to choose the right protection tailored to the situation in which you need the protection.
