What is a sound tube?
An important part of the hearing aid is the sound tube, as it is through this that the sound is transmitted from the microphone into your ear canal. The sound tube is thin, hollow and comes in different lengths and different attachments for each hearing aid. The length is indicated on the tube by a small number mark, usually between -1 and 4. In many cases, the tube is unique for the left or right ear, so be sure to choose the right one when buying your sound tube. Always ask your audiologist for the designation and part number for the particular size and ear that suits you.
How do I change the sound tube of my hearing aid?
Changing the tube for your hearing aid
If you have a behind-the-ear (BTE) hearing aid, it's a good idea to periodically replace your plastic tubing to improve sound quality and extend the life of your hearing aid. If your plastic tubing has become stiff and hard, then it is definitely time to replace it. We sell plastic tubing in 50 cm sizes, so when it's time to replace, lay your old tubing against the new one and then cut to the right length.

For those who have a behind-the-ear (BTE) hearing aid with a thin sound tube, it also needs to be replaced and cleaned to maintain good sound quality. Feel if the plastic material is starting to harden, then it's time to replace the sound tube. Between replacements, it may be helpful to use a cleaning needle to get at earwax that has crept into the sound tube. The ear wax can make a whistling sound if it remains in the sound tube.

If you have a small speaker at the end of the tube, you don't have an audio tube, you have a speaker unit. You can't change it yourself, your audiologist will help you with that.
